A broad term that initially referred to the structure of materials at dimensions smaller than the macrostructure. With the introduction and wider use of structural analysis at the nanoscale (nanostructure), microstructure is now generally considered to refer to the structure of materials at an intermediate scale, approximately from 1×10‑7 m to 1×10‑4 m
